"Open house" on the Menhaden at Pier 91 in Seattle, Washington.

The USS Menhaden, having just completed a regular overhaul at Mare Island, docked at Seattle over Memorial Day weekend for a port visit before two weeks of post-overhaul trials at Dabob Bay and Carr Inlet.

General visiting was scheduled for Memorial Day, and so many people showed up, that visiting hours were extended for an hour and a half to handle the crowd. Even so, the security guard at Seattle's Pier 91 had to cut the line late in the afternoon and began turning people away. The last of the 934 visitors had waited two hours in the brisk 55 degree weather to tour Menhaden.

The Menhaden crew was so impressed by the turnout of visitors that arrangements were made to extend visiting on Sarurday and Sunday. The Seattle news media responded enthusiastically and visiting was well advertised in the newspapers, on the radio and television. The turnout totalled over 2,270 persons who had come from all over western Washington to see a United States submarine.
